β Cephei stars in the ASAS-3 data. II. 103 new β Cephei stars and a discussion of low-frequency modes Context: The β Cephei stars have been studied for over a hundredyears. Despite this, many interesting problems related to this class ofvariable stars remain unsolved. Fortunately, these stars seem to bewell-suited to asteroseismology. Hence, the results of seismic analysisof β Cephei stars should help us to better understand pulsationsand the main sequence evolution of massive stars, particularly theeffect of rotation on mode excitation and internal structure. It istherefore extremely important to increase the sample of known βCephei stars and select targets that are useful for asteroseismology. Aims: We analysed ASAS-3 photometry of bright early-type stars with thegoal of finding new β Cephei stars. We were particularly interestedin β Cephei stars that would be good for seismic analysis, i.e.,stars that (i) have a large number of excited modes; (ii) showrotationally split modes; (iii) are components of eclipsing binarysystems; (iv) have low-frequency modes, that is, are hybrid βCephei/SPB stars. Methods: Our study was made with a homogeneous sampleof over 4100 stars having MK spectral type B5 or earlier. For thesestars, the ASAS-3 photometry was analysed by means of a Fourierperiodogram. Results: We have discovered 103 β Cephei stars, nearly doubling the number of previously known stars of this type. Amongthese stars, four are components of eclipsing binaries, seven have modesequidistant or nearly equidistant in frequency. In addition, we foundfive β Cephei stars that show low-frequency periodic variations, very likely due to pulsations. We therefore regard them as candidatehybrid β Cephei/SPB pulsators. All these stars are potentially veryuseful for seismic modeling. Moreover, we found β Cephei-typepulsations in three late O-type stars and fast period changes in one, HD168050.Table 2 and Figs. 2-14 are only available in electronic form athttp://www.aanda.org The V photometry for all 103 stars is available inelectronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr(130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/477/917
| Revisiting the region of the open cluster NGC 5606 We present polarimetric observations in the UBVRI bands corresponding to54 stars located in the direction of NGC 5606. Our intention is toanalyze the dust characteristics between the Sun and the cluster, aswell as to confirm doubtful memberships using polarimetric tools. Wealso want to determine if a group of 11 B and A stars identified in thepast by Vázquez & Feinstein (1991, A&AS, 87, 383) infront of NGC 5606 has any physical entity. From polarimetric data wehave found at least two dust layers along the line of sight to the opencluster. The observations show that both dust layers have their localmagnetic field with an orientation which is close to the direction ofthe Galactic Plane (θ = 70.0 °), but the direction of thepolarimetric vector for the members of the cluster seems to be lowerthan this value. NGC 5606 can be polarimetricallycharacterized with P_max = 2.97% and θv = 63.5 °.The internal dispersion of the polarization values for the members ofNGC 5606 seems to be compatible with intracluster dust. We were able toadd four possible new members to the list of stars in NGC 5606, and toreject others accepted as members in past investigations; and weidentified 17 (out of the 54 observed stars) with intrinsic polarizationin their light. The group of late B- and A-type stars could bephysically related, with characteristics of an open cluster ofintermediate age (between 0.79 and 1. × 108 yr). Forthis group we obtained representative values of P = 2.12% andθv = 70.0 °. The new cluster, which we haveprovisionally named Anon (La Plata 1), extends from NE to SW across theface of NGC 5606 covering about 10'. The fitting procedure ofSchmidt-Kaler's ZAMS (1982, in Landolt/Bornstein, Neue Series VI/2b) wasused to derive the distance to the group, obtaining a distance modulusof Vo - Mv = 9.90 (649 pc from the Sun). The meancolor excess associated with the small group is EB-V = 0.27± 0.08 mag and the dust distribution shows great variabilityacross its face. We think that the small open cluster has goneundetected due to the lack of bright member stars in it.Based on observations obtained at Complejo Astronómico ElLeoncito, operated under agreement between the Consejo Nacional deInvestigaciones Científicas y Técnicas de laRepública Argentina and the Universities of La Plata,Córdoba, and San Juan. | New Estimates of the Solar-Neighborhood Massive Star Birthrate and the Galactic Supernova Rate The birthrate of stars of masses >=10 Msolar is estimatedfrom a sample of just over 400 O3-B2 dwarfs within 1.5 kpc of the Sunand the result extrapolated to estimate the Galactic supernova ratecontributed by such stars. The solar-neighborhood Galactic-plane massivestar birthrate is estimated at ~176 stars kpc-3Myr-1. On the basis of a model in which the Galactic stellardensity distribution comprises a ``disk+central hole'' like that of thedust infrared emission (as proposed by Drimmel and Spergel), theGalactic supernova rate is estimated at probably not less than ~1 normore than ~2 per century and the number of O3-B2 dwarfs within the solarcircle at ~200,000.
| Catalog of Galactic OB Stars An all-sky catalog of Galactic OB stars has been created by extendingthe Case-Hamburg Galactic plane luminous-stars surveys to include 5500additional objects drawn from the literature. This work brings the totalnumber of known or reasonably suspected OB stars to over 16,000.Companion databases of UBVβ photometry and MK classifications forthese objects include nearly 30,000 and 20,000 entries, respectively.
| Observations of OB-stars at the former Leiden Southern Station About 700 stars, mostly OB-stars, were observed by the author at theformer Leiden Southern Station at Hartebeespoortdam, South Africa, inthe observing seasons 1965, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1977, 1978. Observationswere made in the five channels of the Walraven photometric system. Dueto weathering of the telescope mirror the W channel gave no reliableresults for the faintest stars (m = 11 mag); in these cases the U-Wcolour index is not given. The change in sensitivity in the V channel, supposedly having occurred in 1968, was not recognised. | Absolute proper motions of open clusters. I. Observational data Mean proper motions and parallaxes of 205 open clusters were determinedfrom their member stars found in the Hipparcos Catalogue. 360 clusterswere searched for possible members, excluding nearby clusters withdistances D < 200 pc. Members were selected using ground basedinformation (photometry, radial velocity, proper motion, distance fromthe cluster centre) and information provided by Hipparcos (propermotion, parallax). Altogether 630 certain and 100 possible members werefound. A comparison of the Hipparcos parallaxes with photometricdistances of open clusters shows good agreement. The Hipparcos dataconfirm or reject the membership of several Cepheids in the studiedclusters. | UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.
| H-beta Photometry of Southern Luminous Stars H-beta photometry for 116 stars listed in Stephenson and Sanduleak's(1971) catalog of _Luminous Stars in the Southern Milky Way_ isreported. The vast majority of these objects are O and B-type stars; afew are A, F, or Wolf-Rayet stars. A systematic difference of on theorder of 30 mmag between the present results and those of otherinvestigators is noted. (SECTION: Stars)
| A spectroscopic database for Stephenson-Sanduleak Southern Luminous Stars A database of published spectral classifications for objects in theStepenson-Sanduleak Luminous Stars in the Southern Milky Way catalog hasbeen compiled from the literature. A total of 6182 classifications for2562 stars from 139 sources are incorporated.
| The young open cluster NGC 5606 The open cluster NGC 5606 has been investigated using broad band UBVRIphotoelectric photometry. The cluster is small and faint with a few starmemberships. A mean color excess of 0.51 was found in the clusterregion, and the fitting method yields a distance modulus of V0 - MV =11.60. From the cluster 'turn-off' point and the fitting of an isochronewith core overshooting, an age of (6.5 + or - 1.5) x 10 to the 6th yrwas obtained for NGC 5606
| The local system of early type stars - Spatial extent and kinematics Published uvby and H-beta photometric data and proper motions arecompiled and analyzed to characterize the structure and kinematics ofthe bright early-type O-A0 stars in the solar vicinity, with a focus onthe Gould belt. The selection and calibration techniques are explained, and the data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussedin detail. The Gould belt stars of age less than 20 Myr are shown togive belt inclination 19 deg to the Galactic plane and node-lineorientation in the direction of Galactic rotation, while the symmetricaldistribution about the Galactic plane and kinematic properties (purecircular differential rotation) of the belt stars over 60 Myr oldresemble those of fainter nonbelt stars of all ages. The unresolveddiscrepancy between the expansion observed in the youngest nearby starsand the predictions of simple models of expansion from a point isattributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of interstellar matter.
| New UBVRI photometry for 900 supergiants A description is presented of the results obtained in connection with asystematic program of supergiant photometry on the Johnson UBVRI system.During the eight years after the start of the program, almost 1000 starshave been observed, about 400 three or more times each. The originalselection of stars used the spectral type catalog of Jaschek et al.(1964) to choose supergiants. Since observations were possible from bothChile and Canada, no declination limits were imposed, and no particularselection criteria were imposed other than to eliminate carbon stars. These are so red as to require enormous extrapolations of thetransformation equations.
